Fall 2023 Wrap Up

A Fruitful Fall

Fall is one of our favorite seasons at LOC. The busy, summer tourist season starts to wane and most of the crowds disperse, leaving us with a much more peaceful way to enjoy the warm weather throughout September. As we progress into October, temperatures slowly drop and the leaves begin to change, bringing with it crisp, gorgeous days and stunning fall color. This year was no different, and there's no better way to witness this than with our favorite fall activity, Canoeing on the Crystal River! This activity gives every participant a front row seat to the the changing season. The Chinook salmon start running at the end of September, perfectly showing nature's life cycle to every student as they make their way down the river. Canoeing isn't always easy, but it's a great way to learn more about team work and patience! We love Fall LOC!

LOC Staff

Our incredible LOC Staff were hard at work all season to help each student work on our three LOC Goals: Do Your Best, Be Considerate, and Have Fun. We had a small but mighty crew this fall who were an absolute blast to work with. Every round of the High Ropes Course, every trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and every hike up to Pyramid Point was a fun and educational adventure! This wonderful group of staff helped each student feel important and cared for as they worked to step outside of their comfort zone. We are always so grateful for their hard work, personal engagement, and awesome sense of humor!

Sports Camp

During the last two weeks of August, LOC hosts athletic teams from all over Michigan to train and bond as a together before their season starts. They're high school and college age teams, ranging from small parochial schools to large public universities like Michigan State University. The majority are cross country teams (with the exception of one football team) and they love coming each year to train on all the trails on and around camp property while preparing for their upcoming season. This year we had about 750 student athletes from 25 different schools come through in that two week period, and it's a joy to share our stunning camp property and surrounding area with our community in this way.

LOC TURNS 30 IN 2024!

We will be sharing more soon about the upcoming festivities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Leelanau Outdoor Center! There will be a a couple of in person celebrations, as well as special LOC merchandise and more.
So stay tuned!
